Last week my parents came over from Australia to visit. It’s been eight months since I left Australia, and it was wonderful to see them both again. Because I had a week off (no exams!) I decided to show them some of my new home, and we spent the week in Remagen and Cologne, and then Berlin and Stuttgart.
First off was the Mother’s Day weekend. We cruised up the Rhein River one day, and had a traditional German breakfast the other. We explored the medieval town of Linz, climbed the tower in the Cologne Cathedral, and ate dinner along the Rhein.
On the Monday morning we headed off to the German capital! Perhaps I’m a little bias, but I think that Berlin is my favourite European city. There’s so much to do and so much to see! I’ve been there before, but I still enjoyed touring the city over my two days there. My parents and I saw all the main sights and more, and enjoyed some time in Potsdam, a neighbouring city that was home to the old German Kaisers. Potsdam is very pretty and it was a great day out in the sun!
Next stop, der Schwarzwald! We flew down to Stuttgart for an early three-day weekend, and used the city as a base to visit the famous Black Forest. Ever since I arrived in Germany, the Black Forest has been one of the places I had to visit, so I was really excited to finally get there! My parents and I explored Stuttgart in one afternoon before turning our attention to some of the smaller towns sprinkled about. My Grandmother used to live in Freudenstadt, so we spent some time in the town looking for her old house (which we found). We also did a quick hike through the forest – another item checked off the bucket list!
We had to come back to Remagen so I could go back to class, and my parents went off to Paris and Rome for a little while. They’ve flown back to Australia now, but I can’t wait to see them again!
