The Red Emperor Necklace Sold For $9.9 Million

Wow!  Isn't this a beauty?  Called “The Red Emperor,” this fabulous Burmese ruby and diamond necklace set with 60 pigeon’s blood rubies, weighing a total of 104.51 carats, was one of the highlights of the Sotheby's Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite Spring Sale on April 7th.  Pigeon's blood is the most desirable color of ruby and these began to be collected by Roop Chand Lunia, the founder of Bangcok's Fai Dee in 1905!  The suite of rubies is free of heat treatment, which is extremely rare these days.  The necklace, designed by James W. Currens, was only completed recently after eight years of crafting

The pear- and heart-shaped rubies range in size from .72 carats to 5.04 carats.  They are complemented by brilliant-cut, pear-shaped and oval diamonds weighing a total of 59.06 carats.

The amazing necklace was estimated at $8.7 to 11 million and sold for $9.9 million!
