A lot of cafes and restaurants have mushroomed in the University area- both in the North and South Campus which attract the college goers with innovative dishes, bottom-line prices and enormous portions. One thing common among all these cafes is that they will almost always have waiting and its a better idea to dine here during the weekend. Also, I have noticed another common thing among all these cafes- the breads. The quality of their breads is pretty unsatisfactory as compared to the other preparations.
One of the most trending places is the Big Yellow Door Cafe, which finds an outlet in both the North and South Campus.
BIG YELLOW DOOR, SATYANIKETAN , NEW DELHI
The ambiance is exquisite- plush, cushiony wooden chairs, garden chairs, classic teak tables and the best part- a low seating area with a mattress on one side, cushions and low tables- a place where you can take off your shoes, unwind and enjoy your meal. One part of the ceiling is lined with beautiful paper cuts outs and the other has faux tree trunks with light peeping through. The front wall, full of post-its from customers.
The cheesy nachos mexicana comes splendidly dressed- classic nachos loaded with cheese, parsley sprinkled over and fresh salsa. The nachos soaked in sour cream, alongside the salsa are delectable.
The smoked chicken sandwich too comes in with a portion of chips and ketchup. Four pieces with the most awesome filling, grilled to perfection! The diced smoked chicken has an amazing, refreshing flavour to it and tossed in mayonnaise.
The bolognaisse pasta is again ravishing! It comes with a slice of garlic bread which is a bummer. But the pasta is a great take on the classic mutton mince- the chicken minced mingled with classic red sauce and penne!
The tandoori chicken pizza is a fiasco. Chicken pieces with a sort of curry and cheese baked on a bread which we can far be termed as a pizza base. The base was rather tasteless, hard and even though they list the dish under their specials, it is something one should avoid at all times.
The paneer tikka roll is on the same lines as the pizza. It comes in with a side of chips and corriander dip. Rather greasy bread with onions and paneer rolled inside laced in corriander dip- not at all pleasing.
The Nachos Baked Dish is scrumptious. Nachos, corn and sour cream baked and topped with black olives and parsley, served alongside fresh salsa. Warm nachos with the very palatable sour cream makes it a perfect dish.
BIG YELLOW DOOR, VIJAY NAGAR , NEW DELHI
The North Campus being more abuzz sees more customers as compared to the Satyaniketan outlet. The cafe greets you with its usual fervency- the smell of great food, chatters, chortles and a kickass playlist. The South Campus cafe has a more relaxed sitting with low seating options which personally appeals more to me. This one has a mix of high stools, wooden chairs, vintage looking tables- chalkboard decor, painted pebbles, intriguing lamps, book shelves and a mirror against a beautiful textured wall amongst other things.
The Baked Nachos Dish is incredible. Last time in the Satyaniketan outlet, the nachos were laden and baked with sour cream, however, here, the dish is simply delightful. Baked to perfection, tremendously cheesy and beneath the layer, loaded with delectable sour cream- the crispiest nachos, topped with jalapeno and olive juliennes. Yumm!
The tipsy-licious pasta is listed as a house specialty and hell is one. It comes in with a piece of garlic bread, which is again nothing but disappointing- it looked better but tasted rather stale. The pasta is scrumptious. Penne tossed with a generous amount of chicken pieces, lined with creamy tomato sauce with a tinge of very sapid bitterness, courtesy the vodka.
The snow capped brownie comes in a nice, tall glass, topped with chocolate chips and chocolate sauce. The brownies tastes more like chocolate cake than brownie but none-the-less, a very palatable, toothsome dessert.
The best part about this place is that, they all the items include the taxes, so you don't just leave with a happy tummy but a happy wallet too.
