Is your PC consuming a lot of CPU power (up to 100%) ? Here's how to fix Windows 10's High CPU usage. If your computer fans are frequently spinning at full speed, it means that your CPU usage has reached 100%. Simultaneously, your computer may slow down. That is inconvenient, especially if you are doing nothing.

Normally, you can avoid this situation by staying away from demanding apps. However, CPU usage can occasionally become uncontrollable due to a bug in a process, such as the infamous WmiPrvSE.exe. Fortunately, in most cases, you can easily fix the underlying issue and lower high CPU usage.

Method 1 : WMI Provider Host (WmiPrvSE.EXE)

The WMI Provider Host process, also known as Windows Management Instrumentation or WmiPrvSE.exe, is a component of Windows that helps organizations monitor and troubleshoot a large number of systems on a network. However, it is not uncommon for the process to spiral out of control.

If this is your problem, open the Task Manager (Control + Shift + ESC) and look for the WmiPrvSE.exe process. It's not working properly if its CPU usage increases a few percent and you're not running any programmed that would affect it.

To fix high CPU usage, restart the WMI Provider Host. Microsoft recently surrendered its official patch. The only option you have now is to manually restart the service. Perform a Windows Search for "Services," and then look for Windows Management Instrumentation in the window that appears. Right-click it and choose Restart. You can also terminate the service entirely., if you desire, or simply restart your computer.

Method 2: Disable the Superfetch feature

Superfetch may appear to be a very useful feature, but it consumes a lot of resources. It learns more about you and your apps and prepares them before you even click the launch icon. This is a large task for your system, and it may cause CPU overload.

This is how to disable Superfetch on Windows 10.

Press the Windows + R keys on your keyboard to bring up the Run utility. Here, type in “services.msc” and click the OK button.
Scroll down until you locate the “Superfetch” service. Simply right-click on it and choose “Properties.”
Click on the drop-down menu next to “Startup type” and select “Disabled.”

Method 3:  Change your power plan to Balanced

Method 4: Adjust Windows 10 for the best performance

Your high CPU usage problem may be caused by your system being poorly optimized. You can change this by turning on one simple option — follow the steps below!

  • Open the File Explorer by clicking on its icon in your taskbar or pressing the
  •  Windows + E keyboard shortcut.
  • Right-click on “This PC” from the left side panel, then choose “Properties”.
  • Click on the “Advanced system settings” link in the left side panel of the new window you opened.

Press the “Settings…” button in the “Performance” section.

  1. Click the Apply button and restart your computer. When your computer boots up, you should be able to see whether or not your CPU usage got lower.

Method 5: Disable startup applications

It's possible that a third-party application on your computer is causing problems with your CPU usage. In this case, we recommend disabling all non-Microsoft startup processes and then testing them one by one to determine which one is causing your CPU usage to be so high.

Here’s how you can disable startup applications in Windows 10.

  1. Open the Task Manager using one of the following ways:
  2. Right-click on your taskbar and choose “Task Manager” from the context menu
  3. Otherwise, press the Ctrl + Alt + Esc keys on your keyboard.
  4. If your Task Manager launched in the compact view, click on the “More details” option seen in the bottom left of the window.

Switch to the “Startup” tab at the top of the Task Manager window. Here, you can see all of the applications that start along with your computer at launch.

Click on an application that doesn’t have “Microsoft Corporation” stated in the “Publisher” column.
Now, click on the “Disable” button in the bottom right of the window. The status of the application should change to “Disabled.”

Repeat this for every single non-Microsoft app, then restart your computer.

Now, your computer should launch up without any third-party apps automatically launching as well. This gives you the ability to test if your CPU usage is back to normal again.
