Arcos' "Runaway" - Song Review

When an independent singer/songwriter describes their labor of love as a collection of EDM/pop songs inspired by 80s male vocalists from the New Wave era... they immediately have my full attention.

Thankfully, Los Angeles-native Arcos' description of his music is on point. The artist has just released his debut synthpop EP, Runaway, featuring five unique dance tunes, including the infectious and innovative title track. The new release definitely proves that hard work ultimately pays off in the end.

The new EP's title track wastes no time in luring listeners into the singer/songwriter's electro-pop world. "Runaway" is a soft, tranquil effort that does not hold back on the energy. From the light background tinkering (is that a xylophone?) to Arcos' bold vocal performance, the song finds the artist chasing the one who currently has hold of his heart. It's an adorable message wrapped up in a compelling beat that adds to the overall experience, it never hinders.

"I looked for you through time and space, I tried to but there's no escape, how could I forget that face? You're just a runaway," he sings on the track's captivating chorus. As he proclaims himself "a fighter for love", Arcos seems to forgive his lover for leaving him behind, admitting to still liking them over a slightly dark and haunting arrangement that becomes the perfect companion to the artist's current mixed emotions.

"Runaway" is a solid introduction to the upcoming artist. His music, including the catchy EP title track, truly embodies that of the 80s synth-pop craze, which may have been an overlooked yet vital stage in the evolution of modern pop sounds. The song may be a throwback to the era in some ways, however, Arcos is able to turn a tried formula into something fresh and intriguing.

Besides the memorable "Runaway", the artist's new EP includes the as-great "Dangerous" and a cover of "Indestructible" by Robyn. It precedes Arcos' upcoming full length debut album, Closer. Keep an eye out for it!
