The booming business of subscription box services - WTHR

Posted: 02 Jan 2020 01:33 AM PST

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — When it comes to subscription box services, think billions of dollars in business! More than 7,000 services now exist, and that estimate is actually on the low end.

In case you're not familiar with the concept just yet, here's a little explanation on how it works: companies let you order online — anything from clothing to dog treats — and deliver them to your doorstep on a typical monthly schedule.

Stitch Fix is huge. It became a thing in 2011 and is still one of the most popular personal styling services out there with 3.2 million subscribers. Stitch Fix says it's not a subscription service, but it still sits at the top when you do a quick Google search for "Top Subscription Boxes 2019."

Here's how it works:

  • Fill out a Stitch Fix style profile.
  • A stylist puts together five items for you.
  • You will get a box delivered to your door.
  • Try everything on to see how it fits and looks.
  • You will only pay for the items you keep and can send the rest back for free.

Stitch Fix started as a service for women only but has since expanded to men, plus sizes and kids.

According to Zuora, the subscription economy has grown more than 300 percent in the last seven years, and more of the places you shop at are expected to get in on this too.

There's an expectation that more men will get on board with subscription services, specifically for grooming. Dollar Shave Club and Harry's are both popular options, with introductory prices beginning at $5 and $8, respectively. The Queen of Free says you can save a ton!

Companies are also coming up with more and more subscriptions for kids:

  • Stitch Fix for kids clothing.
  • KidPik is also for clothes but just for girls.
  • KiwiCo sends arts and science projects.
  • OwlCrate gives you a box of books each month. The Queen of Free subscribes to this one for her girls and loves it!
  • America's Test Kitchen Kids Young Chefs' Club provides kid-approved recipes and hands-on activities. .

These make great, last-minute gifts, so if you're struggling to come up with an idea for a birthday gift, you might want to check out one of these.

As for the fitness fanatics out there, there are hundreds of boxes out there focused on healthy living:

  • FabFitFun is a popular option that includes 8-10 products in each box.
  • Under Armour's ArmourBox can include clothes, shoes, water bottles or a yoga mat.
  • FitSnack gives you a box of healthy snacks and nutrition tips. The more months you order, the cheaper the boxes are. A 12-month subscription puts you at $25.90 a month.

Always check to see if the company offers first-time subscriber pricing.
