The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will now allow female missionaries to wear dress slacks, the Church said in a press release Thursday.
Previously, women serving missions for the Church were required to wear skirts, though women in some missions had been wearing slacks during wet seasons to protect from mosquitoes, the Church noted.
The Church said its sister missionaries would continue to be asked to wear skirts during church services and while attending the temple.
In making the change, Church leaders cited missionary safety as a top priority. The allowance of pants would benefit women serving missions in colder climates and would allow sister missionaries to ride bicycles as well.
Details of the revised missionary dress and grooming guidelines were made available online.
