Is Hip Hop music art? Some rappers create great art with their music, but most of the talk in Hip Hop right now just makes me believe it is far from an art-form. People have been saying things like 'rappers have become too friendly with each-other,' and 'Hip Hop is meant to be competitive.' If that is true, then Hip-Hop music is far from art. Music is meant to be creative and not competitive. What is wrong with rappers collaborating every now and then, as long as they still bring the best out of themselves?
I just don't know what's up with all these negative driven energy in Hip Hop right now. Maybe when I was younger, I was cool with it, but it just sounds stupid now. Styles P started pushing for this agenda cos he is nolonger in the mainstream of Hip Hop, and everybody totally bought into the competitive ish when Kendrick dropped that 'Control' verse. When people come with this whole- 'Rappers should hate eachother' shit, it just disgusts me. The whole hypocritical nature of rappers and rap listeners is just really annoying sometimes.
Make the best music you can make, and be motivated to make better music because you love the art of making music...you love the art of making good hip hop music. But don't hit me with that bullcrap that rappers have to always go at each-other. When they were starting out, Mobb Deep and Nas collaborated a lot, but it never diminished their individual skills on the mic. It also doesn't mean things will always be rosy in Hip Hop. Rappers are human beings, and they will feel emotions of jealousy and envy, and they will act on it by making songs going at their fellow rappers. It will always happen, but it shouldn't be the main motivator...it should never be a criteria in rap. It should be a by-product. Of course it sometimes make the Hip Hop music scene interesting, but dueling too much on it and making it the center of attraction just shows the world how backward the black community still is. Because, really, Hip Hop music is the window through which the world views the black community.
